Understanding Salicylic Acid: How to Use It for Clearer Skin.

Salicylic acid is one of the most widely recommended ingredients for blackheads, whiteheads and breakouts. It gets deep into pores to clear out the oil and dead skin that cause blemishes, and helps calm redness at the same time.

Here's what salicylic acid is, which breakouts it helps with, and how to use it for clearer skin without irritation.

What is salicylic acid?

Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid (BHA), originally derived from willow bark. Unlike water-soluble exfoliants such as glycolic acid, it's oil-soluble. That means it can work its way into oily pores, where it loosens the mix of oil and dead skin cells that clogs them.

It's one of the most established acne ingredients in skincare. Over-the-counter acne products typically contain between 0.5% and 2%.

Which breakouts does salicylic acid help?

Salicylic acid works best on breakouts caused by clogged pores:

  • Blackheads: open, clogged pores with a dark surface.
  • Whiteheads: closed, clogged pores that appear as small white or skin-coloured bumps.
  • Mild inflamed spots: small red bumps and pimples, where it also helps calm redness.

When to see a doctor: if you have deep, painful lumps or cysts, acne that leaves scars, or breakouts that don't improve after a couple of months of consistent care, see a doctor or dermatologist. These often need prescription treatment.

Benefits of salicylic acid for skin

  • Clears clogged pores: it dissolves the oil and dead skin that block pores, helping to clear blackheads and whiteheads.
  • Helps prevent new breakouts: regular use keeps pores clear, so fewer blemishes form.
  • Calms redness: its anti-inflammatory properties help reduce the redness and swelling of spots.
  • Smooths texture: gentle exfoliation leaves skin smoother and more even.
  • Refines the look of pores: with clearer pores, skin looks more refined and less shiny.

How to use salicylic acid

Choose the right strength

For at-home use, 0.5% to 2% is effective and well tolerated. Higher-strength salicylic acid peels should only be done by a skin professional.

Start slowly

Begin with two or three evenings a week, then build up to daily use if your skin is comfortable. A slight tingle is normal, but stinging, burning or flaking means you should cut back.

Don't over-exfoliate

Avoid using salicylic acid on the same night as retinol, other exfoliating acids or scrubs. Alternate nights instead, so your skin isn't overwhelmed.

Keep skin hydrated

Salicylic acid can be drying, so always follow with a lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturiser.

Wear sunscreen every day

Exfoliated skin is more sensitive to the sun, and sun exposure can darken the marks breakouts leave behind. Wear a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every morning.

Be patient

Most people see clearer skin after 4 to 6 weeks of consistent use. Stick with it, even if progress feels slow at first.

A routine for acne-prone skin

HD 2% Salicylic Acid Serum is our acne solution. It combines 2% salicylic acid with glycolic acid, hyaluronic acid and vitamin E in a lightweight, fast-absorbing formula that clears pores, smooths texture and helps calm the redness of breakouts. It's free from parabens, MI/MCI, colourants, alcohol and fragrance.

Here's how to build a routine around it.

Morning

  1. Cleanse. Use a gentle, non-stripping cleanser.
  2. Tone. HD Calendula Herbal Extract Essence calms redness in normal to oily skin.
  3. Moisturise. HD Soothing Repair Cream hydrates without a heavy or greasy finish.
  4. Protect. Finish with HD Ultra-Light Hydrating Sunscreen Essence SPF50+ or the non-comedogenic HD Mineral Daily Defence Cream SPF50.

Evening

  1. Cleanse. Remove makeup and sunscreen thoroughly.
  2. Tone. HD Skin Activating Treatment Essence hydrates and refines.
  3. Treat. Apply HD 2% Salicylic Acid Serum. To target fine lines and texture too, alternate nights with HD Retinol Serum, but never use both on the same night.
  4. Moisturise. Finish with HD Soothing Repair Cream.

Once or twice a week

Use HD Deep Cleansing Magic Mud Mask to draw out excess oil. Because it contains glycolic acid, use it on a night when you skip the salicylic acid serum and retinol.

If you're new to salicylic acid and retinol, introduce one at a time, a few weeks apart. Explore more in our Blemish-Prone Skin collection.
